Staying Sharp in an AI World
It’s difficult to escape talk about generative AI. Undoubtedly, one of the most disruptive technologies that we have seen. As an early adopter of all things technology related, I remember seeing the first iterations of ChatGPT and thinking how my most burdensome administrative tasks would disappear overnight.
It didn’t quite work out that way, but generative AI has genuinely helped me with my work. From making quick work of tables and calculations to writing emails and report outlines, it’s easy to outsource a lot of these tasks. The problem is that it can be too easy. I found generative drafts to quickly lose my voice and tone. And the dreaded em dash has become highjacked. For the those savvy enough to notice, it becomes a sign that the written piece may have had some AI involvement. I’ve come around to limiting my use of generative AI in this regard to proofreading and grammar checking.
There’s early research to show that neural connectivity changes with the use of generative AI technology. The more external support, the lower the activity, the lower the recall and the lower the sense of ownership of the work.
Sahil Bloom captures these sentiments well. He discusses how to save our brains from AI and outlines principles and strategies to keep our brains sharp in AI world.
